We’ve spent almost two weeks in Lucaya, Grand Bahamas, on a beautiful dock, with a gracious host, and much to see and do. Part of the reason we stayed here this long is because we needed a safe place to hide out during a tropical storm. The other reason is because our new friends, Rick and Jenn, are sailing to The Bahamas for the first time, and we wanted to welcome them upon their arrival and show them around The Abacos. More about them in a future post, but we’re excited they’re on their way from Florida and we’re happy to greet them when they come.
We’ve enjoyed our time in Lucaya. Here is a snapshot of some of the things we have done this past week:
The owner of the house where we docked is so kind. His name is Gilles. He has a love for people and was so eager to chauffeur us to the grocery store, bank, hardware store, marine store, etc. We spent an entire day with him as our tour guide, teaching us about Freeport and Lucaya.
We had a great lunch with Gilles overlooking the beach at The Stoned Crab restaurant, where he is one of the top patrons. It was a great day with him, and we are so thankful for his hospitality, time expended, history taught, and memories made. Thank you, Gilles! If you’re ever in Lucaya, Grand Bahamas, you can find his villas and dock space available in Navionics!
Of interest, the name “Lucayan” is derived from the Taíno Lukku-Cairi Indian tribe, meaning “people of the islands.” The Lucayans were the original dwellers of The Bahamas before the European conquest of the Americas, and they inhabited most of the Caribbean islands at the time as well. They were encountered by Christopher Columbus as the first indigenous Americans. Sadly, the Lucaya people no longer exist.
Here’s a little picture montage of Taino beach and its surroundings. We enjoyed touring the area and spending two weeks in Lucaya, Grand Bahamas! We hope to make it back some day and are so grateful for the experiences we’ve had and the memories we’ve made!
The last few days of our time in Lucaya were spent preparing for Thanksgiving and getting ready to head out the day after. We had a great time in Lucaya!
